THE RECIPE FOR RED EYES—CHLORINE AND URINE
We’re sure that, like us, most people assumed that their eyes turning red from being in a swimming pool was due to chlorine. To our surprise, it’s actually the combination of chlorine with urine that causes the issue. Yikes!
According to the CDC, the mixture of chlorine and nitrogen found in urine creates chloramine, which is responsible for red eyes. To reduce this risk and prevent eye damage while swimming, it’s recommended to wear swim goggles. They need to be watertight to prevent any seepage.
