As soon as Kanaby proved that the message in the bottle was authentic, the people in charge at Montclair State University realized just how significant their finding had been. Soon enough, the press got involved and local news—namely, News 12 New Jersey—were the first to get a hold of the scoop.
CNN was the major nationwide news corporation that followed. Making justice to Hanly and Lennon’s point, they rightfully decided to make Kanaby the focus of the story while also interviewing Mahoney.
