His father’s illness and subsequent passing had been the catalyst behind Prince Albert’s ascension to the role of Monaco’s official leader. It was a time of change and transition, both personally and nationally.
A year into his reign and six years into his private relationship, Prince Albert and Charlene Wittstock made their first public appearance at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. An appearance at a Monaco charity ball soon followed this debut.
