Over 2 Million Places of Worship
India’s historical treasures encompass a multitude of magnificent mosques, temples, and tombs, each symbolizing the nation’s rich heritage. The country boasts an astounding count of over two million Hindu temples, complemented by around 300,000 Muslim mosques. Varanasi, a riverside city, alone harbors a staggering 23,000 Hindu temples.
To put this in perspective, India’s temple count surpasses the entire population of Bahrain, Estonia, and Latvia. However, considering India’s substantial Hindu population, constituting nearly 80% of the 1.4 billion people, these two million temples appear reasonable, if not surprisingly modest.
