One of the many widely-believed myths about mental health is that character flaws or weaknesses in personality cause mental health problems. Or that people who struggle with them can snap out of it if they try hard enough.
Such stigma is also why people vastly underestimate the need for a support system during the healing and recovery process. Already knowing their mum would have an adverse reaction to the news, this person chose not to tell her about their stay in a mental hospital.
